National Public Natural Gas Week 2023 – An Annual Recognition of Importance

October 1-7 is Public Natural Gas Week, a national celebration of the publicly owned natural gas utility municipalities and cooperatives. ODIN continues to be in step with these valuable community assets and have joined them in this well-deserved recognition this week.

ODIN’s value and personal touch are a couple of the key reasons why our customer base includes these taxpayer-funded utilities. Examples include:

  • City of Monroe, where they desired to build a greenfield LNG peak-shaving facility with some used equipment. ODIN provided an assessment of the equipment and determined viability. We were the cost-effective choice to provide full engineer of record design and commissioning services to build and start the vaporization, trucking, and storage plant.
  • Experiencing unprecedented growth in their natural gas system, leading to the need for additional storage and vaporization capabilities at their LNG plant, Greenville Utilities Commission called upon ODIN’s EPC capabilities. We helped by engineering, procurement, and construction management services, and also supported the GUC via RFI’s, commissioning, and as-builts of the facility.

This year, ODIN has asked some of our customers and friends to tell us why they feel what they do is important to their community and, by extension, the country at large. Here are a few of their thoughts:

“Public Natural Gas Week is a great opportunity to express appreciation for all the workers involved in making natural gas a safe, reliable, and efficient energy source for our communities and residents.”

Darin Yusi
Gas Engineer
City of Ellensburg Gas Division

“Public Natural Gas Week is a time that I reflect on the hard work the men and women in our industry perform to ensure our customers’ quality of life is enriched. Most of this work is performed “behind the scenes,”, however ensures natural gas remains reliable, affordable, and safe. ”

Stephen Mayfield
Assistant Gas Manager
City of Tallahassee

Gas utilities provided by municipalities recognize that their customers need access to reliable energy and having a local public natural gas utility is the best way to do that. There are many other benefits of having a public natural gas utility, for example:

  1. Public natural gas utilities are directly accountable to the citizens they serve, and decisions regarding your energy needs are made locally through citizen participation instead of being made outside of the community.
  2. Public natural gas utilities are locally controlled operations, which ensures that rates remain competitive and affordable. This is especially reassuring as energy and fuel prices continue to rise and affect your family’s bottom line.
  3. Lastly, public natural gas can play a valuable role in helping broaden our tax base and helps local dollars stay at home. We also work with local financial institutions and make purchases from local businesses. This, in turn, improves the local economy and creates jobs.

The public gas utilities serve their respective communities and we invite you to join us this week and recognize the vital role these organization play in this country.
